November 2008 ESC News
Hello!
Help us share the news!

Over the past two years, this newsletter has become a great way to notify our readers about the events and activities going on everyday at ESC. We want to be sure that all of our staff and supporters have a chance to receive it.

If you know of a co-worker or partner who may not be receiving the newsletter, there are several ways that they can sign up to receive it. You can easily forward it to them using the "Forward Email" link at the bottom of the newsletter. You can also direct them to our website at www.escswa.org, where they can sign themselves up using the form in the top right corner of our homepage.

We appreciate your help in spreading the word about how people can stay updated on the exciting things happening at our agency!
Hunger and Homelessness Week

Each year, one week before Thanksgiving, ESC participates in the National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. This year, the awareness week will be held November 16-22.

During this week, advocates in our community take part in a nationwide effort to bring greater awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness. Participation not only brings greater awareness to our community, but also helps to promote the national endeavor to end hunger and homelessness. The plight of those without a home can be lonely and difficult. Addressing their struggles by organizing and participating in this event may bring greater solidarity and understanding, as well as promote future involvement from local citizens.

ESC offers a variety of programs to assist the homeless and hungry in our communities, including our CHANCE and Transitional Housing programs. The Community Development department will be accepting donations for these programs during National Homeless and Awareness Week. Any donations of towels, washcloths and non-perishable food will be greatly appreciated and will help to assist the clients who are participating in these programs.

As we head into the holidays it is important to remember the struggles of others in our community and do what we can to make sure that our neighbors do not go hungry. We thank you for doing your part in promoting our goal of helping people and changing lives.

Flu shots - Did you get yours?

There are still about 40 employees who signed up for a flu shot and did not receive them. Those shots will be available to those staff members until next Tuesday, November 11th. At the end of that time, staff who signed up will have a payroll deduction of $5 charged to their next paycheck and the remaining shots will become available to other staff members.

For more information, please contact Becky Hopper at 417-781-0352 ext. 205.

Home Need Repairs?

ESC recently received funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide home repairs in Jasper County. The program has proven invaluable to the clients it has served, by providing them with a safe, decent, sanitary and energy efficient place to live. It preserves our most valuable material asset - our homes.

To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet income guidelines. The household may have up to a maximum income based on the number of people living in the home. The maximum income guidelines for Jasper County households are as follows:

1 person - $26,800
2 persons - $30,650
3 persons - $34,450
4 persons - $38,300
5 persons - $41,350
6 persons - $44,450

A special priority has been established in Jasper County to assist those people who are living in the city limits of Joplin and who reside in the Junge neighborhood area.

A priority has also been established for Jasper County residents living outside the city limits of Joplin who are elderly (over age 65).

If you live in Jasper County, your income is below the above mentioned guidelines, and you own your own home... you may qualify for the program. For an application, please visit the ESC outreach office in Jasper County (601 E 6th Street in Carthage) or the main office in Joplin (302 S Joplin). For more information about the program, please contact Debbie Markman at 781-0352 ext. 222.

The Home Rehabilitation Program (HERO) is sponsored by the Missouri Housing Development Commission.
