ESC is looking forward to our first Employee Health and Safety Fair! The event will be held at Christ Community United Methodist Church (2700 E. 44th St. in Joplin) on Thursday, May 21st from 9-3:00. Registration will begin at 8:30 am. Mark your calendars because this is a mandatory event for all ESC staff members.
The day's events will include workshops, demonstrations, vendor booths, food and several door prizes. All staff members will also receive a gift for attending!
In addition, the Freeman Screen Team will be there to conduct health screenings, such as blood pressure, bone density, cholestrol screening, etc. The cost of this will be $10 due at the time of the screening. Screening results are confidential and will be sent directly to the employee.
We are looking forward to a fantastic event! See you there!
National Women's Checkup Day!
As women, we are important to our families.
We tend to take care of our own health last... putting our families first.
It's time to change that!
The 8th Annual National Women's Checkup Day will be held Monday, May 10, 2010, during National Women's Health Week. In support, ESC's Women's health clinic will be offering free information on women's health, birth control and STD's. Our clinic offers well woman exams, pap smears and birth control on a sliding scale and/or donation, which is based on household income.
Why is it important for women to participate?
It is important for women to get regular checkups because:
Screening tests, such as Pap tests, can find diseases early, when they are easier to treat. Some women need certain screening tests earlier, or more often, than others.
Screenings and routine care can help women lower their risks of many health conditions, including heart disease.

Managing Seasonal Allergies
For those who suffer from seasonal allergies, more commonly known as hay fever, the arrival of spring brings bothersome symptoms, such as sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, coughing, and congestion. Hay fever, a temporary inflammation of membranes lining the nasal passages, occurs when the body releases a chemical called histamine in response to airborne allergens from trees, grasses, weeds, and flowers.
Hay fever sufferers can lessen their symptoms by following these simple guidelines:
Know the pollen count. Most weather reports include this.
Keep doors and windows closed at home and in the car when pollen counts are high. Use the air conditioner if needed.
Wear sunglasses or glasses outdoors.
Stay indoors as much as possible, especially in the evening when pollen counts tend to be the highest.
Change or wash clothes after exposure to allergens.
Wash bed linens weekly in hot water.
Shower or bathe before bedtime to remove pollen from hair and skin.
Wear a dust mask when mowing or doing yard work. If possible, ask someone who doesn't suffer from hay fever to mow for you.
While avoiding allergens provides the best defense against hay fever, it's not always possible. A number of over-the-counter and prescription medications exist to help manage symptoms. Antihistamines relieve itching, sneezing, and runny nose while decongestants ease nasal and head congestion. Nasal sprays and eye drops offer relief as well. Most sufferers find relief by using a combination of allergy medications.
If you are one of the more than 35 million Americans affected by hay fever, don't suffer needlessly. Speak to your doctor. Treatment is available.
