March 2009 ESC News
Hello!
Homeless Connect a Success!

On Tuesday, February 3rd, the Homeless Coalition sponsored the first Project Homeless Connect at the Salvation Army Gymnasium. Approximately 20 different agencies, programs and individuals attended the event, designed to serve the needs of homeless individuals. All of ESC's departments were represented at the event.

A variety of information was available to attendees. Highlighted services included housing options, applying for social security cards and birth certificates, mental health services, health care and just about everything in between.

Individuals were asked to complete a survey upon arrival. Based upon the survey, 49 homeless persons, 11 unstably housed individuals and 28 people who were not homeless attended the event. Approximately 10 attendees chose not take the survey.

The Project Homeless Connect event included several giveaways for participants. These included coats, hats, gloves and blankets. Attendees also had the opportunity to enter a drawing for a bike, backpacks, gift certificates to Second Chance Store and a trolley pass.

A survey of vendors resulted in a 100% positive response that they wanted to participate in the event again. Volunteers from local churches also expressed an interest in participating if it is held again. Overall, it was a highly successful event for all involved.
