July 2007 ESC News
Hello!
We Can All Pitch In...

We can save the agency up to 15% on our utility bill by remembering to turn off the lights in our offices, all radios, hallway lights AND our computers when we leave in the evenings  AND especially on weekends.  This could equate to a savings of $200 to $300 a month - or $2,000 to $3,600, annually - just in our central office!

Please help us conserve Energy -  Turn It OFF!

Join Us For Lunch!

Join us Friday, July 20th between 11:30 and 12:45 for the next ESC staff appreciation luncheon. The event will include hot dogs, hamburgers and other fun suprises. Don't miss it!

Staff Fish Fry!

The B & S Committee has announced plans for a fish fry for the September 21st employee luncheon. Of course, for this event to be a success, we need fish to fry! We are asking those employees who like to fish to please freeze some filets from your catch and share them with your fellow employees at this event. Please contact either Becky Hopper, Jeff Goldammer, Debbie Markman or Stan Heater and let them know that you will be participating as a volunteer fisher-person. The committee hopes to make this an annual tradition!
Tools for School Fair!

The Tools for School Back to School Fair will be held on July 27, 2007 at Memorial Hall in Joplin from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The purpose of the fair is to give free school supplies to low income children attending kindergarten through 5th grade in the Joplin school district. Families need to be income eligible and must pre-register with Community Development to be able to attend the fair and pick up their school supplies.

We are planning on having several booths at the fair that will provide information and services to the families we serve. Health screenings will be offered including dental, vision, hearing and speech tests. The health department will be present to set appointments for children needing immunizations before the start of school. We are also scheduling head lice checks and hair cuts.

We are recruiting services in the community to have a booth at the fair to provide information about what they offer to the community. Students and their families will be required to attend a minimum number of informational or health booths in order to obtain the free school supplies.

We are also currently in the process of seeking donations for school supplies from area businesses. A basic list of required supplies (K-5) for the Joplin school district is available in Community Development, for anyone interested in making a donation.

Please join us in supporting the school fair, whether through a donation or by sharing the information with others in our community. We hope to make this an annual event and be able to offer it to other school districts in coming years!

Time to Recruit!
Head Start applications are now being taken at ESC Head Start centers for the 2007-08 school year, which begins September 1, 2007. To be age eligible for Head Start, children must be 3 years old.

Do you know someone who might qualify? Please help us spread the word!

Head Start children improve their listening and speaking skills, form good habits, receive healthy meals and snacks, play indoors and outdoors in a safe setting and will leave Head Start more prepared for kindergarten, excited about learning, and ready to succeed.

The regular Head Start session operates September through May, Tuesday through Friday. Regular Head Start is offered at most locations. Golden City attends Tuesday and Wednesday only. Transportation is provided in most instances.

Full Start is a program option that assists families by meeting their need for quality childcare beyond the normal hours of regular Head Start.  Full Start follows the school district schedule where the Full Start option is offered.  Full Start is open 10 hours per day, Monday through Friday.  Parents must be working or attending school full time.  A fee may be required depending on the parents eligibility for the Division of Family Services childcare subsidy.  Transportation is not provided for Full Start.  Carthage, Lamar, North Joplin, South Joplin, Carthage, Webb City, Anderson, Noel, and Granby offer Full Start.

We encourage parents to call the center nearest them to schedule an appointment to complete an application for the program as soon as possible.  High demand is expected for the available slots.

Please advise potential applicants to leave a message  if they are unable to reach someone at the center nearest them. Someone will return the call as soon as possible.

Need Weatherization?

ESC is now accepting applications for our Low-income Weatherization Assistance Program waiting list. The program enables low-income families to permanently reduce their energy bills by making their homes more energy efficient. Applicants must meet low-income guidelines to be eligible, and preference is given to elderly and disabled individuals.

The waiting list is the shortest that it has been in many years, so it is a great time to promote this service to your clients!

By reducing the energy bills of low-income families instead of offering aid, weatherization reduces dependency and liberates these funds for spending on more pressing family issues. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, weatherization reduces heating bills by an average of 31% and overall energy bills by $358 per year at current prices. This spending, in turn, spurs low-income communities toward job

growth and economic development.

Some of the measures that are utilized include replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lighting, adding insulation, weather stripping doors and windows, air sealing duct work and repairing electric furnaces.

The Low-Income Weatherization Assistance Program is supported by local and federal funds from the Department of Energy (DOE), Missouri Gas Energy (MGE), Empire Electric Company and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) when funds are available.

To apply, clients should contact one of ESC's outreach offices. The client will be asked to complete the appropriate forms, including income documentation to verify eligibility.

Is there anything interesting going on in your department that you would like to share with our staff, board members and supporters? To have your information included in an upcoming issue of News from ESC, please contact Andrea Osiek at aosiek@escswa.org.
