January 2011 ESC News
Hello!
A Playground Makeover!

On Saturday, October 30th, Lowes of Carthage sponsored a playground renovation event at Carthage Head Start.  The day consisted of building new swings sets and six new, brightly painted picnic tables to provide an outdoor learning space for our students.

Approximately twenty workers from Head Start, Lowes, Subway and Crowder College painted, hammered, cleaned, pushed and pulled to provide an amazing outdoor space for the kids at Head Start.  Subway provided lunch for all the workers and Lowes provided all of the building materials.

The children were so excited when they saw the playground, that one little girl exclaimed, "Oh my goodness we have new desks!"

ESC would like to say once again, "Thank You Lowes and Subway for a great playground make-over!"

Conscious Discipline S.T.A.R. Award

In January 2010, Paula Oakes, Head Start Classroom Guidance Coordinator became a Certified Conscious Discipline Instructor.  Then, in June 2010, Paula was given the honor of being asked to be a presenter at the National Conscious DisciplineŽ Institute in Orlando, Florida.

At that time, she was given the Conscious Discipline S.T.A.R. award by Dr. Becky Bailey.  The Conscious DisciplineŽ website has posted research that was completed by Paula and the Head Start teaching staff showing the results of the use of Conscious Discipline in our program.

In April of 2011, Paula Oakes and Jenae Shoemaker, Head Start Coordinator of Staff Development will be co-presenters at the 38th Annual Head Start Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.  The title of the presentation will be "Reducing Power Struggles in Head Start".  It will highlight how the use of Conscious Discipline has changed our Head Start program.

We are very proud of Paula and all of the hard work she and our staff have put in to make this program such a success!

Is there anything interesting going on in your department that you would like to share with our staff, board members and supporters? To have your information included in an upcoming issue of News from ESC, please contact Andrea Osiek at aosiek@escswa.org.
