August 2009 ESC News
Hello!
Health Fair on August 24th...

ESC's Women's Health department will be hosting a Health Fair on August 24th from 9-2 at Memorial Hall (8th and Joplin Street) in Joplin. We will be providing dental screenings, glucose and cholesterol screenings, blood pressure screenings, referrals to medical providers and much more! Staff members will be available to answer all your questions about managing your weight and leading a more healthy lifestyle.

The primary focus of the health fair is to assist underinsured and uninsured people in the low-income population who may be pre-diabetic or diabetic due to poor physical condition. It will be a good opportunity to have your health condition checked, and you could even win a door prize!

The agency will also be participating in a Gardasil Clinic at MSSU on August 31st from 9-3. Please contact Pamela Hosp at 625-9323 for more information.

Joplin Project Homeless Connect!

The Homeless Coalitions of Jasper and Newton Counties will be co-hosting the Joplin Area Project Homeless Connect on Wednesday, August 12th. The event, to be held from 10am-3pm will be located at Memorial Hall in Joplin (212 W. 8th Street).

Project Homeless Connect is a free, one-day event where homeless individuals and their families will have access to service providers in the community. Breakfast and lunch will be available and free gifts will be given away throughout the event.

Some of the services that will be available at the event include: medical services, mental health services, substance abuse information and treatment services, housing providers, Head Start, Legal Aid, Social Security Administration, veterans benefits and service providers, supplies including coats and toiletries... and SO MUCH MORE!

We hope to see you there!

WE CARE Back-to-school fair!

The Newton County back-to-school fair is in full preparation for about five hundred K-12 students. ESC has limited those pre-registered participants to 223. Pre-registration ensures that they will get a full allotment of school supplies, a backpack and a five dollar gift card for each school aged child. If students are not pre-registered they are welcome to attend the fair anyways, as we are ordering a lot more supplies than usual to address the needs of low-income families.

The event offerings will include free haircuts, clothing, shoes, vision and dental screenings and more. In addition, there will be snacks and fun activities for the kids who attend.

The fair will be held at the Abundant Life Church on August 1st from 1-5pm. Those who are pre-registered must be at the fair by 4pm or they will not be guaranteed their supplies or gift cards.

ESC to host blood drives!

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. However, only 5% of the eligible population donates blood every year.

To help with the supply in our area, ESC will be hosting blood drives during the month of August. Dates and locations are as follows:

Monday, August 10th:
Joplin Central Office from 8-11am
(302 S. Joplin Street, Joplin)
Neosho Outreach Office from 2-5pm
(116 N. Jefferson, Neosho)

Monday, August 17th:
Carthage Head Start from 8-11am
(1810 Baker Blvd., Carthage)
Lamar Outreach Office from 2-5pm
(807 Gulf, Lamar)

Please encourage all community members, including clients, to come donate. There will be items for giveaway at each location for community donors.

Employees are highly encouraged to donate. At each location, employees that donate can put their name in for a drawing for a free day off. There will be an employee's name drawn from each location for a total of four lucky employees who will each get an extra vacation day!

This is a great opportunity to promote our agency and the programs we offer!

Is there anything interesting going on in your department that you would like to share with our staff, board members and supporters? To have your information included in an upcoming issue of News from ESC, please contact Andrea Osiek at aosiek@escswa.org.
